New Delhi: More than half of Indian students considering an MBA in New Zealand are now taking Permanent Residency (PR) into account while planning their overseas education, highlighting a growing focus on long-term career and settlement prospects alongside academic goals.

According to recent student consultation data from LeapScholar, PR was discussed in 53% of conversations involving New Zealand MBA programmes. This was higher than the share recorded for several other popular study destinations, including Germany at 38%, the UK at 35%, the UAE at 29%, and Ireland at 26%.

The growing interest in New Zealand's long-term settlement options comes ahead of significant changes to the country's post-study work visa system, scheduled to take effect from November 16, 2026.

PR and career prospects becoming key considerations

For Indian MBA aspirants considering New Zealand, residency prospects were mentioned in 53% of discussions, narrowly ahead of job opportunities at 52% and salary expectations at 45%.

However, immediate financial considerations continued to dominate decision-making. Living costs were discussed by 70% of candidates, while 68% considered scholarships when evaluating their study plans.

Interestingly, 18% of applicants discussed living expenses, scholarships, PR and job opportunities together, suggesting that students are increasingly assessing overseas education as a broader investment rather than focusing solely on obtaining a qualification.

The LeapScholar dataset also found that 42% of all New Zealand-focused student enquiries included discussions around permanent residency. This indicates that interest in migration pathways extends beyond MBA applicants to students considering other fields of study.

New Zealand to introduce revised post-study work options

The upcoming changes will introduce a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa, providing eligible graduates with up to six months of open work rights.

The reforms will also expand eligibility for the standard Post-Study Work Visa to certain Level 7 Graduate Diploma graduates who already hold a bachelor's degree. Eligible master's graduates will continue to have access to open work rights for up to three years, subject to the applicable requirements.

The changes are expected to make post-study planning an important consideration for international students assessing New Zealand as a destination.

Studying in New Zealand does not guarantee PR

While PR is becoming an important consideration for prospective students, immigration specialists point out that completing a degree does not automatically lead to permanent residency.

Applicants generally need to qualify through an eligible residence pathway. Under the Skilled Migrant Category, this involves meeting the required skilled residence points threshold, while some applicants may qualify through eligible Tier 1 or Tier 2 occupations listed on New Zealand's Green List.

A Permanent Resident Visa is a separate step and generally requires the applicant to have held an eligible Resident Visa for at least two years, along with meeting the relevant conditions.

Career outcomes influence students across disciplines

The outcome-focused approach is not limited to MBA aspirants.

Among students exploring Supply Chain and Logistics programmes, 70% reportedly discussed job prospects and living costs, while 65% considered salary expectations and 50% raised residency as part of their discussions.

Interest in employment during studies was particularly visible among students looking at Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. About 22% of these candidates discussed part-time work, roughly twice the 11% overall baseline recorded across fields.

The findings point to a broader shift in how Indian students are evaluating international education, with career opportunities, affordability, post-study work options and potential migration pathways increasingly being considered together when choosing a destination.
